Hi! I love to help families build a strong culture of communication and contribution.
An eternal student, I majored in psychology and theology and I have a Masters in Peace and Conflict Studies. This helped me consider how parenting and wealth equity play roles in social cohesion. My eclectic career twirls around the twin themes of social justice and children. It has included state and national education and consultancy roles with children and families, international aid and development, and advocacy. I'm also an enthusiastic presenter. I've taught all ages from Grade 1 to university, and run conference workshops for parents and families. I love to bike ride from the beach in Sydney, Australia, dance whenever music plays, and I’ve raised two caring sons with my husband Brian. |
Hi, I’m Susy Lee and this is a snapshot of my life and career insights...
Growing Up: My family was broken and then blended. I went to five primary schools. Family can be safe, hard, mysterious, devastating, joyous and often missing some important information about life. I know my parents loved me, but they had a lot more to worry about than me, and hadn’t been taught that well either.
Teaching High School: Teenagers love talking about big important issues and feeling they can be part of something. They like stuff to be relevant. They like their parents to be relevant. Having adults they can talk to about problems can make all the difference to their resilience.
My Own Kids: I brought generational change to my own family. My two boys are so much wiser than I was at their age! Initially, and then over and over, I was shocked that it’s not often immediately obvious what to do – so I read a lot of books. Such love, and such amazement at their gorgeousness, and also at the pressures on them.
My Faith: I've been a follower of Jesus for more than three decades and have attended one local Christian faith community for all that time. The Sermon on the Mount is my inspiration for life and Philippians 4:8 is my favourite verse.
Working with Families through Churches: There are so few opportunities for parents and children to learn together – we all go our separate ways to develop new skills. This is a shame because I noticed over and over what magic it is for whole families to have an experience to learn from together!
Teaching Primary School: Kids are so impressive – and underestimated. They have wisdom beyond what we realise ‘our babies’ know. If we don’t talk to them about big issues and the skills of life, they’ll pick their information up in the school yard or on the internet!
Aid & Development: There are real needs for the generosity that brings change in the world. The planet itself needs our cooperation - luckily this is what helps us thrive as a species. Countries are developing at different rates and the pandemic has shown we’re all in this together. We absolutely can make a difference.
Teaching University: Wisdom is more than learning information – this is a great time to decide on the causes young people will stand up for, where they will gain purpose and energy… or whether they will be consumed by a culture that says: ‘it’s all about me’.
Advocacy: Kids overseas are helping overcome community issues earlier than kids in affluent Western culture. Kids rise to the level of our expectations. It’s good for them to be able to respond to world issues, rather than become overwhelmed by them. Advocacy – standing up for justice or a cause you believe in – really works!
